Buying a Drum Kit for the first time can be a daunting experience, especially when walking into a music store for the first time and not really knowing what to ask for.
Here at the The Music King, we will provide you with honest and relevant advice on which Drum Kit is suitable for you. We will take everything into account from:
- Your budget
- The age and ability of the player
- and the likelyhood of them carrying on with the drums
This will enable you to make your own educated decision on the right kit for you. Most of the kits on the market are full sized full sized kits and are generally for people over the age of 10. All kits shown below are Full Sized Kits. We do sell Junior Kits if you are looking for a kit for someone under the age of 10. Please CLICK HERE.
If you have a larger budget, then the Premier Olympic Kit has always been a great seller. It is a few pounds more and Remo heads are not included. If you really want to push the boat out for your first drum kit, go for the Brand New Peal FZ Series. This is the replacement for the Pearl Export which has been the best selling kit in the UK for years.
One thing to remember is that most drum kits are inter-changeable, so as you get better and become more serious, you can add to and upgrade all parts of your kit. Many drummers are always on the look-out to improve their kit, so don't think you have to buy everything all at once. Cymbals, stands, drums and pedals can always be upgraded as you go.
Many Drum kits on the market today look the same but as a rule, you need a minimum of five lugs around each drum shell. This allows the skin to be tensioned evenly on the drum and will provide a nicer sound. As for the hardware on the drum kit, double braced stands are always best as it will keep your stands upright and more secure. All of our Devil Drums and Boston kits do have these features. The current trend is to have black hardware. The Pearl FZ and Devil Drums Kit both have this option as standard. As opposed to chrome you get matt finished rims and hardware, which we think looks very cool.
A few things to look out for when looking at a beginner drum kit are as follows:
Double braced hardware:

Hardware is extremely important when look at a drum kit as
the parts usually take some kind of weight
or suffer ‘stress' over time. Double
braced hardware refers to the cymbal and snare stands where instead of having
just a strip of metal
for each joint of the stand (e.g. 50's/60's) there 2
thick angled pieces connected together to give greater support and longevity.
Branded drum skins:
Only a
few beginner drum kits we have seen don't come with their own branded
skins but you can get caught out! Drum kits which have a no name
branded skin
are very
much prone to a short life! For example, The new Stagg FAB drum kits we
are getting in shortly will have Stagg branded drum skins. From
experience,
branded drum skins are always slightly better quality and last longer.
Cymbals:
In most
cases cymbals will be included in a beginner drum kit but this will not
always be the case so be sure to double check! The basis cymbal set up
you need
is a
pair of hi hat cymbals and a ride/crash-ride cymbal. This will get you
starter but here at the music king we think it is better to have anothr
extra cymbal -
which are available at the cymbals section on our website.
